This quarter’s Listworthy was originally going to be an article on California’s best undergraduate business programs (stay tuned for the next edition of the CKQ for this list!) but given the massive effect of the Coronavirus on our planet, my guess is there are a lot of young people who want to get into the medical community – maybe sooner rather than later. With those students in mind, I have crafted a list of all of the U.S.-based ‘Direct Admit’ programs for medical school – meaning schools that you apply to for your undergraduate education AND your medical schooling at the same time – and if admitted, you need only maintain a minimum GPA and possibly take the MCAT (and meet the minimum qualifying score) and you don’t need to apply to medical school – you are already admitted!
Now, before you get too excited, note that most of the direct admit programs in the nation are very small (almost all of them have incoming classes of under 200 students) and as such, the admission percentages are frighteningly small (usually between 1% and 8%). Further, the successful population will not only have exemplary curriculum, grades and test scores, but significant, medically relevant extra-curricular experience, outstanding letters of recommendation, outstanding entrance essays, a probable interview and maybe more.
These programs are specifically designed for young people who have absolute certainty of their interest to work as physicians in the future. If that’s not you, steer clear of these programs!
So, all that said, here’s the list of U.S.-based BS/MD programs, along with the expected graduation time (in alphabetical order):
